Where to store your back-up disks…
In all the back up strategies for your computer’s data that I’ve read the experts tell you that you should keep an offsite copy of your back up disk.
Easier said than done in many cases, and for the past nine-years I’ve been looking for a solution. Now I think I’ve found one!
It just wasn’t feasible to ask a relative to keep the disk at their house as that would involve a day’s travelling to get to them, and back. I’d rather spend the time earning money. Not that I don’t want to visit my relatives, it’s just that I prefer to spend some time with them! And I’d rather not entrust a computer disk to the mail system.
My solution is in two parts. One I’ve found a very good way of connecting a ‘bare’ hard disk to my computer to use for the back ups. This is theĀ NewerTech Voyager Q quad interface SATA Hard Drive Dock which I bought from The Bookyard in Liverpool. Thanks to Don McAllister of ScreenCastsOnline for posting the link on Twitter. With the addition of some suitable hard drives in the right size I can create backups on what are relatively cheap hard drives. Easy to carry and easy to store.
The local storage company, Easistore, has a small, indeed very small, but huge for just one or two bare hard drives, unit that I can lease for a very reasonable amount each week. The firm has a branch a short walk from where I work so I can kill two birds with one stone. I can keep a copy of my back up offsite, and get some exercise.
So, if you’re looking for a way to keep a back up offsite, have a look for a local storage company that leases small spaces. Might be the answer you are looking for.
Care to share your ideas for how to safely store data offsite.
